A Brief History of Indicators

Geoffrey Mason

University of California - Santa Cruz

Abstract

Frobenius-Schur indicators are a set of numerical invariants attached to any finite group. They have been influential in group theory since their introduction by Frobenius and Schur about a century ago. In recent years there has been a surge of interest and dramatic applications of indicators in the wider context of Hopf algebras and tensor categories. In this talk we will survey some of these ideas, and discuss some open problems both new and old.
